David Bowie UNSEEN

Today would have been David Bowie’s 75th birthday. Bowie is one of these iconic people who left a mark on contemporary culture and a whole generation of people.

5 years ago I curated an exhibition of Tony McGee's photographs of David Bowie at Imitate Modern Gallery. The exhibition featured unpublished and unseen photographs of David Bowie as well as original contact sheets bearing David Bowie's signature, writing and gold star stickers he put to indicate the images he liked. The exhibition revealed a personal side of the musician, in contrast to the many characters that he impersonated throughout his career. The exhibition was widely reported in the press and was a big hit amongst David Bowie fans and was therefore extended at the gallery and travelled to Warner Music HQ.

These are the contact sheets from the exhibition bearing David Bowie's signature, writing and gold star stickers he put to indicate the images he liked. I love these little things which reveal someone’s personality and whilst looking you feel in touch with their genius. I like to think that after this exhibition I know the man a little better.

Happy Birthday David Bowie 👨‍🎤
